Overview
The main route for non-UK nationals to work in the UK. You need a job offer from a Home Office–approved sponsor, a Certificate of Sponsorship, and a salary meeting the thresholds. Leads to settlement (ILR) after 5 years.
Eligibility
- ✓Job offer from a licensed sponsor (check the Sponsor Register)
- ✓Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer
- ✓Salary ≥ £38,700/year (2026 general threshold) or the 'going rate' for the role, whichever is higher
- ✓Role on the eligible occupations list (many skilled roles qualify)
- ✓English: B1 level (pass an SELT test or prove degree taught in English)
